Italian fashion designers Dolce & Gabbana (pictured right) have announced the signing of a three-year partnership with London's Chelsea Football Club.
In addition to providing the formal club suits, the Milanese fashion house will also create the “Dolce&Gabbana Lounge” in the West Stand at Stamford Bridge as well as redesigning the club’s main office reception.
“We are really happy about this partnership and to be able to link our name to such a prestigious club like Chelsea. We are big football fans, for us it means healthy competition, intense passion and great discipline.” said Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.
Chelsea's CEO Ron Gourlay added: “We are delighted that Dolce&Gabbana will be our official supplier of formal wear for the next three years. Their designs for this season’s team wear are exceptional, and we’re excited to be partnering with such a world renowned, and innovative design house.

Chelsea's Italian connections go back a long way with Italians Gianluca Vialli, Claudio Ranieri in past seasons and currently Carlo Ancellotti as trainer managers. Top quality players such as Gianfranco Zola, Roberto Di Matteo and Carlo Cudicini have also played decisive roles in the club's more successful recent history. The London side has had a reputation as 'trend setters' since the late 1960s when players were often seen around the fashionable boutiques, restaurants and night clubs of the King's Road area of South London.

Space agreement in Farnborough

UK Minister of State for Universities & Science David Willetts met with the Honorable , Italian Minister for Education, Universities & Research Mariastella Gelmini at the Farnborough Air Show last week to discuss future developments and agreements in research into space projects.

Ms. Gelmini pledged a continued government investment into ASI research of 7 mln euros over the next 10 years.

Chelsea manager/trainer Carlo Ancelotti became the first Italian coach to win the Premier League last weekend as his team thrashed Wigan 8-0 to beat Man Utd. to the top. Ancelotti is also set to take the Londonclub to the 'double' next weekend with the FA Cup final against Portsmouth at Wembley. In the meantime the Reggio Emilia born former player flew to Naples to give evidence in the Italian 'calciopoli' football bribery trials. He was questioned by the prosecution who began to examine him over his time at both Milan, and his previous spell at Juventus. In particular Ancelotti reflected on the 2004-05 season. The coach denied knowledge of any conditioning of the league fixtures. source

Back in London, West Ham have dismissed coach Gianfranco Zola after a negative seson in which the club nearly faced relegation. They finished fourth from bottom, five points above Burnley. The club issued a statement asfter the sacking of Zola saying "The Board of Directors would like to thank him for his contribution and wish him well for the future." The Sardinain leaves the club with spirits high however stating that "Despite what has been a very difficult period for me, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at West Ham." source

Roberto Mancini's position as coach/manager at Manchester City seems safe however as club bosses assure he will remain. Mancini is already planning to bring his wife, Federica, over to England in September and is now renting a house after spending his first few months in Manchester in a city-centre hotel. Club chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak, said "(Roberto) has done an excellent job, coming in mid-season and organising the team". City have won a place in next year's Europa League.

And on World Cup level, England coach Fabio Capello has made several surprise choices in his 30-man squad to go to South Africa in June. Tom Huddlestone, Scott Parker, Adam Johnson and Michael Dawson are the surprise names to make the squad. Surprisingly, the England coach has selected just five forwards, with Darren Bent joining Wayne Rooney, Emile Heskey, Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch, although missing out on the inital squad does not necessarily mean exclusion from the World Cup. Once his final 23-man group is named Capello is still allowed to make changes due to injury, and replacements do not have to come out of the original 30.

Capello decides captain's fate

England coach Fabio Capello stripped John Terry of his role as team capatian on Friday after reports of his alleged love affair with ex-partner of England team-mate Wayne Bridge. The final decision was left up to Capello, and was met with general approval by the press with headlines such as 'Grazie Signor Capello' and 'Terrevederci'.
After his 12 minute meeting with Terry Capello said "This is now over, it is finished. It is time to move on, but John Terry is still an important player for England." Capataincy of the team will be taken over by Rio Ferdinand.
The other Italian coach in Terry's career, Carlo Ancelotti of Chelsea, paid tribute to his "perfect'' captain after the club beat London rivals Arsenal on Sunday putting the Blues back on top of the Premier League.

British workers at a power plant project have been undercut by a subcontractor paying Italian labourers over £1,000 less on average per week than the agreed rate. A pay audit revealed that Italian firm CMN, one of the subcontractors employed by engineering firm Alstom to build a power station at Staythorpe in the east Midlands, was defying a national pay deal agreed between Unite the union and the industry. The audit, requested by unions, revealed that between April 2009 and December 2009, an average of 17 labourers a month were being paid an average of €1,300 a month less than the agreed rate.
Unite's assistant general secretary, Les Bayliss said: "The underpayment of these workers is outrageous. We have demanded that the workers are paid back in full. Unite will not allow employers to get away with breaking agreements and underpaying its workers, regardless of nationality."

Mancini goes to Manchester

45 year old Italian Roberto Mancini has been nominated Manchester City's new coach / manager after Mark Hughes was sacked over the weekend.
Ancona born Mancini has already enjoyed a successful career as coach at Inter-Milan as well as with Rome's Lazio and Fiorentina before that, as well as an impressive record as a player with Bologna, Sampdoria and Lazio. City will be his first experience in England, apart from a brief stint with Leicester City in 2001 where he played 4 matches before retiring as a player. The Times reports he is planning to bring two or three Italian players to the Manchester club as well as some of his ex fitness staff colleagues.
He will immediately be put to the test with City as they confront three games in quick succession over the Christmas period, something which does not happen in Italy where Christmas is considered a rest period.

Italian student arrested for filming in London

An article in The Guardian, also featured on Italian national TV news programme TG2, has told of her ordeal after being stopped by two police officers for filming buildings in the Paddington area of London.
Simona Bonomo, 32, an art student at London Metropolitan University continued filming when she was approached by officers who asked her what she was doing and demanded ID. After being accused of being "cocky" Ms Borromeo was threatened with a fine for cycling the wrong way down a one-way street. The two officers then went away but then returned with about six others. The student was then accused of being aggressive, bundled to the ground and arrested. She was then held in custody for 5 hours and charged with a fine of £80 for "harassment, alarm and distress in a public place."
The Met confirmed that a woman was stopped and searched under section 44 of the Terrorism Act.

New Ryanair flights

Ryanair has announced new flight routes between Italy and the UK.
As from 19th December it will be possible to fly between Turin and Bristol, and from Bristol to Venice/Treviso as from 29th March 2010. A flight from Cuneo in Piedmont to London Stansted will also start this month as will the flight from East Midlands in the UK to Turin. Flights from Liverpool to the popular seaside resort of Rimini and to Trapani in Sicily will also open at the end of March next year, as will Pisa / Leeds.
Easyjet on the other hand has cancelled its daily flight between Bristol and Venice International.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi claimed in a recent Cabinet meeting that with an increase in the country's GDP (PIL, in Italian) Italy has become the sixth richest nation in the world, effectively overtaking and becoming 'richer than' Great Britain.

Mr Berlusconi has this year been the subject of alleged sex scandals involving a 16 year old girl and an 'escort' who was paid for her services in the official PM's residence Palazzo Grazioli. He also lost a battle for legal immunity last month after a ruling by the Constitutional Court.

Italy denies Taleban bribes

The Italian government has denied allegations by The Times of a deal struck with Italian soldiers in Afghanistan and local insurgent groups. The newspaper reports of a Taleban commander from the Sarobi region explaining how the deal was reached — and how it came apart, leading to the fighting in which ten French soldiers died. Italian Defense Minister Ignazio La Russa gave a short press conference in which he stated that the claims were untrue and that The Times had merely reported "trash" (spazzatura) He added that either the Ministry or the Italian government would duly sue for false allegations.

Ancelotti continues with Chelsea success

Chelsea FC's new manager Carlo Ancelotti continues his successful start with the London club with his sixth win in a row on Sunday against Tottenham, securing a maximum 18 points in the Premier League.
The former Parma, Roma and AC Milan player secured a three year contract with Chelsea on 1st July this year and was off to a flying start winning the Community Shield against Manchester United in August. Ancelotti also received praise from fellow Italian, England manager and trainer Fabio Capello. "Fabio is a friend,'' says Ancelotti, "He was my coach for one year in Milan - a fantastic coach. I respect him. We have been opponents a long time". Despite some problems with tenses and vocabularly Carlo's knowledge of the English language has also vastly improved. BBC Sports interview

Muse amuse and confuse!

British rock band Muse confounded Italian TV audiences on Sunday by switching places on their instruments thereby completely fooling presenter Simona Ventura as to their identities. With singer Matt Bellamy on drums, guitarist Christopher Wolstenholme on bass guitar and drummer Dominic Howard on lead vocals a lead guitar the band completed a mimed 'playback' performance of their new single Uprising in the popular Quelli che il calcio Sunday afternoon show.
Afterwards Ms Ventura approached Howard presuming he was the lead singer Bellamy who is married to an Italian and has home near Lake Como. Howard cooly responded to all questions pretending to be Bellamy.
Having interviewed the 'wrong' band member the popular celebrity 'Super Simo' was later ridiculed for her 'ignorance' of current music and as having incompetent staff on the programme who failed to inform her of her mistake, and the band's practical joke.
Ms Ventura was judge on the first 2 editions of the Italian "X Factor" vocal talent show.

Italian minister writes letter to FT

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini has written a stiff letter to the Financial Times in defence of PM Berlusconi, his government and his reputation. The letter comes in reply to an FT article by Geoff Andrews published on July 30th entitled "Italy’s problems do not end with Berlusconi".
In the letter Frattini praises Berlusconi for his achievements and for being "democratically elected three times in 15 years". He also states that Italy's foreign policy has earned "worldwide appreciation for its effectiveness" citing the recent G8 summit in L'Aquila and boasts how Italy has increased it's military commitment in Afghanistan with 3,200 troops.

Simple Minds saving Venice

Scottish rock band Simple Minds held a concert in St Mark's Square last weekend in favour of "SMS Venice". Proceeds from the concert and from video and audio recordings of the show will all go towards the fund aimed at restoring Venice's precious buildings.

The group's singer and mainman Jim Kerr owns a hotel Villa Angela and estate in Taormina in Sicily.

BSM chooses the Cinquecento

BSM, formerly the British School of Motoring, is ending a 16-year relationship with the company by swapping its basic learner vehicle from the Vauxhall Corsa to the much more modern and dashing Fiat 500.
Fiat will supply 14,000 cars to BSM over four years in a marketing deal that will attempt to inject a bit of Italian styling into a century-old British brand, boosting the motoring school’s image among its younger customers.

New Caruso discovery in Yorkshire

Retired recording engineer Jim Pattison has discovered a set of 78s records dating back to the early 20th century on a visit to Brodsworth Hall, Doncaster, Yorkshire.
Among them, a recording of Italian tenor Enrico Caruso singing Addio dolce svegliare from Puccini's La Bohème with Geraldine Farrar (soprano) Gina Ciaparelli-Viafora (mezzo-soprano) and Antonio Scotti (baritone).
The recording, allegedly made on March 10, 1908, in a New Jersey studio, was captured by a single acoustic recording horn, resembling a gramophone horn.

Enrico Caruso's musical career spanned the years 1895 to 1920 but was cut short by a serious illness which eventually killed him at the age of 48.

Maccarinelli to retire

Italo-Welsh boxer Enzo Maccarinelli has told the sports press that he is to retire from boxing.
The former WBO World Cruiserweight champion, also known as 'the Big Mac' had said before his fight against the unbeaten Russian Denis Lebedev on 18th July that the contest represented “the last chance saloon” in terms of getting his career back on track, following 2 KO losses in his last 3 fights.
"That's it, there was nothing there on Saturday, that wasn't me," the 28-year-old said after the contest.

Macarinelli was born to Italian parents in Swansea in 1980 an attended the Bishop Vaughan Catholic school before taking up his career in boxing.

Italian lessons despite drop in language learning

Guardian.co.uk has recently launched it's "Learn Italian" series under the travel section. So far this internet-age phrase book complete with audio section has covered Culture & Sport, Food & Shopping and Travel and Accomodation. A useful 'Italian gestures' section is also on-line from the daily's website.
Sally Hunt, General Secretary of the UCU, has praised the Guardian for its efforts although informs of how British Universities are falling behind in foreign language teaching as a trend to close many language departments spreads.
"At a time when demand for fluency in global languages is rising, it is ironic that the University of the West of England, Imperial College and the University of Exeter are joining the ranks of universities to have massively cutbacks in provision of foreign languages," says Ms Hunt and adds "Without the students who could become our future teachers, translators and interpreters we will seriously damage not only our civil society, but how we do business with, and interact with, the rest of the world.

Berlusconi: "Italy better than Britain"

The Berlusconi family-owned daily newspaper Il Giornale has launched an attack on Britain claiming that Italy is better than UK "at everything"! The paper's editorial criticised Britain as "no longer great".
The attack comes after the free British press apparently sided with papers such as La Repubblica in giving details of Mr Berlusconi's presumed affairs. Mr Berlusconi also called The Guardian a 'small provincial newspaper' of little worth.

Italian Renaissance drawings in London

The British Museum has announced plans for an exhibition of Italian Renaissance drawings next summer. The exhibition will be in collaboration with the Uffizi in Florence with about half the drawings coming from Italy. The BM director Neil Macgregor stated that bringing all the drawings together will "allow a different reading of draughtsmanship from the period. It will allow a new engagement with this part of the Italian Renaissance."

Vatican gives blessing to HP!

On the eve of the worldwide release of the new Harry Potter film "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" The Vatican's official newspaper has given it's thumbs up to the story by J K Rowling. L'Osservatore Romano praises the new film for its clear depiction of the eternal battle between good and evil represented by the struggle between Harry and his arch enemy, the evil sorcerer Lord Voldemort. It further added that "the search for immortality epitomised by Lord Voldemort" was wrong. The Vatican had previously criticised the series for encouraging interest in the occult amongst younger people. The paper's film critic also said that the "Harry Potter e il Principe Mezzosangue" is the best in the series so far.

Sarah Brown's G8 online

British PM's wife Sarah Brown gives her personal account of ther G8 in Italy this week via her blog and twitter updates.

She will be part of the 'G8 spouses' program which started in Rome. "I’m really looking forward to meeting up with the ‘other halves’ – some of them I have met before from last year’s G8 and the G20 in London" she said before the event.

On arrival at L'Aquila on Wednesday evening she reported to be "having nice cup of tea".

Berlusconi strikes back at Guardian

Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi has struck out against The Guardian after its article on Monday declaring that Italy's organsiation of the G8 summit this week in L'Aquila has been 'chaotic' and that "growing pressure from other member states to have Italy expelled from the group". The article by the paper's diplomatic correspondent Julian Borger was in turn criticised by Berlusconi as being "una grande cantonata di un piccolo giornale", a large blunder by a small newspaper. Italy's Foreign Minister Franco Frattini also hopes that "the Guardian is expelled from the great newspapers of the world".
The Guardian's claims of chaotic preparations were founded on a report by Richard Gowan, an analyst at the Centre for International Co-operation at New York University. The Guardian further reports that the US had taken control of G8 proceedings and that Washington organised "sherpa calls" (conference calls among senior officials) in a last-ditch bid to inject purpose into the meeting.
The G8 summit was moved from La Maddalena in Northern Sardinia (also home to a US military base) to L'Aquila in Central Italy after Berlusconi's ambitious plans to rebuild the city after major earthquake struck in April of this year.

Di Matteo at West Brom

Swiss-Italian footballer Roberto Di Matteo has signed a 12-month rolling contract to take over English club West Bromwich Albion, who were relegated from the Premier League under Tony Mowbray last season despite winning plenty of praise for their style of football.

"My philosophy is to play successful and winning football. We have our view on how we would like to achieve that success. I think that will turn out to be a positive style of football and we'll try to apply that to the Baggies this season."

An advertisment fo an upmarket brand of ice-cream Antonio Federici Gelato Italiano, featuring a glamorous nun in her habit and a priest wearing a cassock in a clinch with the tagline "kiss temptation" has been banned in the UK by the Advertising Standards Authority. The ban follows 10 complaintsto the ASA who then banned the ad "as likely to cause serious offence to some readers.
The ice cream company defended the ad saying it was unlikely to "offend deeply"also considered no physical contact was shown and merely 'temptation' was implied.

The company relies heavy on its stereotypical Italian image in marketing its product which is 'inspired by a traditional homemade recipe first created in 1896..near Portofino and Rapallo'

British climber dies in Italian Dolomites

Patricia Fletcher of Nantwich, Cheshire has died in a mountain climbing accident after a fall of some 300 metres on the Via Ferrata delle Trincee, above Arabba in the Dolomites, a spectacular mountain chain straddling Italy and Austria. Mrs Fletcher, 64, was on a holiday organised by Collett's Mountain Holidays. On its website, Collett's states that most routes were suitable for the 'man on the street' or at most are considered as of "medium difficulty".
The climber's body was recovered on Sunday by a helicopter from the Bolzano emergency rescue service.

Amanda Knox speaks..in Italian

Amanda Knox, the American student accused of the murder of British student Meredith Kircher in the university town of Perugia in Central Italy in 2007, has given evidence to the court this weekend claiming her innocence in the affair. The American also claims that she was beaten and put under pressure by Italian police after her arrest which led to the false accusation of local bar owner Patrick Lumumba, later proved innocent. Meredith was found strangled and sexually assaulted after a Hallowe'en party on November 1st 2007. She is accused of the crime together with her ex-boyfriend the Italian Raffaele Sollecito and Ivory Coast-born Rudy Guede.
Ms Knox gave evidence to the court assisted in part by an interpreter but also in Italian, which she says to have learnt better during her 18 months in prison.

Lamborghini - any colour but green

The Italian sports car manufacturer Lamborghini is the subject of the latest 'Greenwash' feature in The Guardian on-line. Fred Pearce's regular colum which exposes false environmental claims, gives details of the company's "green pledge" "to cut 35% from the carbon dioxide emissions of its cars by 2015". They are also putting 17,000 square meters of solar panels on the roof of its main factory at Sant'Agata Bolognese near Bologna, and introducing other measures such as better insulation to cut factory emissions by 30%.
Despite its efforts Lamborghini's model are at the bottom of the league of emissions with 495g of CO2 for every kilometre driven "more than three times the emissions from a typical saloon and five times that from the lowest carbon petrol cars."
Greenwash is translated into Italian for the weekly 'Internazionale' magazine.

Ancelotti goes to Chelsea

Chelsea have confirmed the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti as their new manager. The Italian has signed a three-year contract with the London club, continuing a tradition of Italian ties to The Blues.
Gianfranco Zola was one of the first Italians to join the Premier League when he was signed by Chelsea in 1996 and is considered by fans at the Bridge to be one of their greatest ever players. Claudio Ranieri also joined the club as manager in 2000 and went on to sign Frank Lampard. Swiss-Italian Robert Matteo also enjoyed success with Chelsea, among other things scoring the fastest goal in an FA Cup Final (43 seconds) in 1997 which Chelsea went on to win. Gianluca Vialli also had a chequered career at Stamford Bridge as both player and coach/manager, although he guided Chelsea to an FA Cup final triumph over Aston Villa in 2000.
Chelsea have just won this year's FA Cup at Wenbly beating Everton 2-1, although ironically Di Matteo's fastest goal record was broken by Everton.

Winner of the 2007 edition of Britain's Got talent has published his new album 'Passione' .
The album contains 10 songs sung by Paul all in Italian including traditional lyrical pieces - E Lucevano le Stelle - Italian versions of popular songs - Piano (Memory from Cats), Senza Luce (A Whiter Shade of Pale), Un Giorno Per Noi (A Time For Us from the 1968 film version of Romeo & Juliet) and a brand new song Bellamore written for Paul by Matteo Saggese and Mino Vergnaghi.
The album was recorded over the space of a year in Prague and Stockholm.

Vauxhall jobs future still in the balance

The wrangling over the future of GeneralMotors took another twist this morning when FIAT said it would not attend today's negotiations over the sale of GM's European arm, Opel, which includes UK carmaker Vauxhall.

The Italian firm, one of two remaining bidders for GM Europe, said that it had been left "perplexed" by the last round of talks, which broke up without agreement on Thursday morning after GM apparently declared that it needed another €300m (£260m) of emergency funding.

Fiat chief executive Sergio Marchionne said his firm was still interested in "finding accord with GM", but would not attend the talks in the German capital, Berlin. He said Fiat had not been able to get full access to Opel's financial records, adding that it was unreasonable to expect the firm to provide funds to a group whose finances remained uncertain.

Free Metro newspaper to end its run

Metro International creators of the free newspaper distributed all over the world announced that it is planning to sell off its operations in Italy as well as in Portugal. The move is part of "a strategic update" in view of latest figures.

In Italy, Metros are distributed in Rome (270,000 copies), Milan (260,000), Turin (120,000), Florence and Bologna (both 60,000) and Genoa (45,000), a total of 815,000 a day.
On November 9th 2006, The Metro Newspaper gets listed into the "Guinness Book of World Records" for being the largest Global Newspaper with 70 editions worldwide and more than 18.5 million daily readers.

Champions in Rome

Thousands of Manchester United fans have gathered in a stifling hot Rome for tonight's Champions League final against Barcellona at the city's Stadio Olimpico.
United's manager Ronald Ferguson is looking to achieve a new record in the club's history making them first team to defend the Champions League title.
